People to People Alumnus Wins 2nd Place in National Spelling Bee

Sidharth Chand from Detroit Country Day Middle School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, competed in the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. As a People to People alumnus- Sidharth traveled with us in 2006 to Australia- we all rooted for him as he competed in this prestigious event.

Sidharth, 12 years old, was one of only three spellers in the finals who never had competed in the national bee. Sidharth noted that he studied 50,000 words in training for the competition.

Sidharth enjoys school, especially math and science, chess, soccer, reading, and tennis.

Here are some of the words that Sidharth spelled in the earlier rounds of the competition:

  • Tautological
  • Ommateal
  • Ziarat
  • Posaune
  • Aptyalism
  • Kulturkampf
  • Introuvable

Sidharth reached the final two and lost in the finals by incorrectly spelling the word “prosopopoeia.” Sidharth spelled the word "p-r-o-s-o-p-o-p-o-e-a", by leaving out the “i”. Sidharth is very pleased with his second-place finish and the $12,500 prize that came with it. He plans on donating some of the prize money to his school and saving the rest.

We are very proud of Sidharth and take pride in calling him a People to People alumnus. Congratulations, Sidharth, on a job well done!
